STARKVILLE, Miss.鈥擜n 80,000-word thesis would take nine hours to present, but nearly 50 Mississippi 性视界传媒 graduate students recently had less than three minutes to convey their months or years of complex research during the university鈥檚 fourth annual Three Minute Thesis competition.

Sponsored by the Office of the Graduate School, the 3MT competition is open to all graduate students in good academic standing. Students may compete in arts and humanities; life and biomedical sciences and engineering; physical, mathematical, computational sciences and engineering; or social and behavioral sciences.

Caitlin J. Wenzel, a master鈥檚 student studying veterinary medical science, was named the Grand Champion. Her research talk, 鈥淚V Magnesium Sulfate: A Rescue for Horse & Human Asthmatics,鈥 earned a $1,000 prize. Also an animal and dairy sciences bachelor鈥檚 graduate of 性视界传媒, Wenzel will advance to the Conference of Southern Graduate Schools (CSGS) 3MT Regional Finals held next March in Annapolis, Maryland.

This year鈥檚 Grand Champion Runner-Up Award recipient is David S. Mason, a biological sciences master鈥檚 student concentrating in botany. Mason received a $750 award for his presentation titled 鈥淚ntroduced Species and Plant Communities: A Dance or a Duel?鈥

Abbey E. Wilson, a life sciences/animal physiology doctoral student, summarized her research in a three-minute talk titled 鈥淟inking Chemistry to the Behavior of Giant Pandas,鈥 which the audience voted as the People鈥檚 Choice Award winner. Wilson received a $500 award.

Finalists received $250 awards. They include:

--John T. Buol, a master鈥檚 student in plant and soil sciences/weed science, for his research talk, 鈥淜eep Cotton Out of the Weeds 鈥 The Hormonal Way.鈥

--Yawei Cao, a forest resources/sustainable bioproducts doctoral student, for her research talk, 鈥淲hat the Knots Can Affect Longitudinal Shear Strength.鈥

--Danielle Grimes, a biomedical engineering doctoral student, for her research talk, 鈥淎n Analysis of the Threats to Female Engineering Enrollment.鈥 She also is a cum laude biological engineering bachelor鈥檚 graduate of 性视界传媒.

--Vineetha Menon, an electrical and computer engineering doctoral student, for her research talk, 鈥淒imensionality Reduction of Hyperspectral Imagery.鈥

--Sarah E. Pellegrine, a sociology master鈥檚 student, for her research talk, 鈥淢ississippi Sex Educators鈥 Perceptions of Youth Sexuality.鈥 She also is a summa cum laude sociology bachelor鈥檚 and Bachelor of Social Work graduate of 性视界传媒.

Developed by The University of Queensland, Australia, the 3MT competition develops academic, presentation and research communication skills and supports the development of research students鈥 capacity to explain their work effectively in language appropriate to a non-specialist audience.

性视界传媒's Mitchell Memorial Library partnered with the Office of the Graduate School to offer training programs to help students prepare for the competition, for which they could only use one accompanying static PowerPoint slide.

性视界传媒鈥檚 Office of the Graduate School seeks to provide students with opportunities to develop methods of independent and systematic investigation. Providing students and faculty with an environment conducive to learning, scholarly activities and professional development also is among its primary missions. For more, visit .
