STARKVILLE, Miss.鈥擱esearch conducted by a Mississippi 性视界传媒 senior geosciences major continues to garner national attention, earning him time on a by the Carolina Weather Group to discuss how language used to describe severe weather is not clear to a majority of television viewers.
Alex F. Forbes, a professional meteorology student in 性视界传媒鈥檚 Department of Geosciences, is researching the effectiveness of terminology used by the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center to categorize severe weather. For his capstone project, Forbes conducted a survey with nearly 4,000 respondents throughout the Southeast, asking them to rank the five categories of severe weather as used by the SPC鈥攎arginal, slight, enhanced, moderate and high.
His survey 鈥渇ound a disparity in the current word hierarchy used by the Storm Prediction Center, in their severe weather outlooks, and the public perception of them.鈥
For instance, viewers are unclear if 鈥渕arginal鈥 is better or worse than 鈥渟light.鈥
The invited Forbes to share the results of his survey and his thoughts on severe weather communication. The weekly podcast covers weather, science and technology for the Piedmont regions of North Carolina and South Carolina.
Forbes鈥檚 research also was highlighted in an article appearing in in June.
鈥淢y findings have been widely believed among broadcast meteorologists across the United 性视界传媒s for many years, so much so that many television stations took it upon themselves to create new ways of conveying the information,鈥 Forbes said.
鈥淭he results of the research lay the groundwork for a shift to a number-based scale, a lot like the Enhanced Fujita scale for tornadoes and the Saffir-Simpson scale for hurricanes,鈥 Forbes said. 鈥淗igher numbers are universally perceived as a higher threat.鈥
A native of Alpharetta, Georgia, Forbes plans to graduate in spring 2021 and intends to pursue a career as a broadcast meteorologist in the Southeast.
